5 Important Tips On Piano Lessons

5 Important Tips for Piano Lessons
Must-Have information before deciding on Piano Lessons!

Music is a very important part of our lives. It does a lot more than just please our ears ? it is an integral part of human development.
Several years ago, there was an experiment done by scientists at the University of California at Irvine in 1993. (published in the journal Nature) They had college students listen to Mozart Sonata for two Pianos in D Major, a relaxation tape or silence. Immediately after these sessions, the students took a spatial reasoning test (the ability to put together puzzles) and the students? scores improved drastically after listening to the Music. The reason is because music and spatial abilities share the same pathways in the brain.

Another experiment was done later on by researchers at Appalachian State University and the researchers were successful as well in connecting music to boosting ?brain power?.
They gave preschool children (ages 3-4 yrs. old) training for 8 months. Children were divided into 4 groups: Keyboard lessons, Singing lessons, Computer lessons and No lessons. After 8 months of this treatment, the children were tested on their ability to put together puzzles (spatial-temporal reasoning) and to recognize shapes (spatial-recognition reasoning) and the results were astounding! They found that only those children who had taken the keyboard lessons had improvement in the spatial-temporal test. (The children did not, however show any change with the spatial-recognition.)

Another interesting observation I?ve made is the connection between the Medical profession and the Music profession ? a large majority of M.D.?s are Classically trained musicians! I?ve encountered many and have asked them all the same question ? how do you make the connection between the medical and the musical ? and the response I?ve had is that they are both very intricate and require a rare focus and mathematical mindset in many different directions at once. It?s achieved by many years of training in either and/or both fields, which by the same token – enhance each other. So to them ? the similarity in brain function and focus is evident and invaluable to both the medical and the musical. It will be interesting to see the results of further study in that matter. Currently, there is no conclusive proof scientifically of the connection between Medical and Musical.

Now ? for the 5 Tips for Piano Lessons!

1) Interest:
Assess the interest of your child. Is this something they really like ? or is it your dream? The child should show genuine interest in music and a keyboard in order for their learning experience to be a pleasant and successful one. If they are not interested ? ask yourself why you even pursued it? Is it because you have an inner desire for it? It?s NEVER too late to begin! Sign yourself up for Piano lessons if that?s the case. I?ve have students of every age ? some played when they were kids then quit. As they got older, regretted quitting and vowed to one day pick it up again. Then there are others who always had the desire but not the opportunity and now find themselves retired with plenty of time on their hands. They?ve actually become Piano virtuosos! I give you these lovely examples to give you hope and a nudge ? psssst! It?s never too late! The student must be genuinely interested.
2) Instrument:
It?s fine to begin Piano lessons on an electronic keyboard. As time goes on, the student will know in which direction they?d like to take the Piano lessons. If it?s just for personal enjoyment, it?s fine to stay with a keyboard.
If it?s for classical Piano training ? then the student should be switched over to an acoustic Piano. In my experience as a Piano teacher, I?ve realized that a Spinet Piano (the ones that have a low back) unless it is given as a gift, should not be purchased. It would be preferable to purchase an ?Upright? which is a Baby Grand Piano, but instead of the strings being vertical they?re horizontal. The reason being, that the action on the keys is much better technically for the student?s hand, and it sound substantially better to the ear.
3) Teacher:
Ask around and get feedback from others about their teachers. Find out the teacher?s background. Where did they get the education from, how long have they been teaching, where do they teach from, what are the surroundings like? Ask current students how patient the teacher is and how do they feel during the lesson. You should get a pretty good idea about the teacher by how current students are progressing. Does the teacher?s personality blend with your child?s. Remember, this is a choice! In school the children have to adapt to the teacher that has been assigned to them, and that?s a good thing. They learn to get along with different types of personalities, but Piano is an extra-curricular activity and should be a pleasant one that they look forward to.
4) Schedule:
Children can be easily overwhelmed by too much in their schedule. As adults ? we?ve experienced overload for ourselves and it?s SO counterproductive! It?s highly advisable to limit activities in order for the kids not to be pulled in too many directions.
Once activities have been chosen, I?ve found with my own kids and students that by writing down a daily schedule, everything gets done and there are no excuses for forgetting to practice.
5) Dedication:
Once a schedule is in place, practicing piano will become part of daily routine. After a while, the student won?t be so ?worried? about time, but will want to achieve goals set by the teacher. The student will need dedication in order for the craft to go from mechanical to musical. Encourage them to listen to a wide range of styles and genre?s in order for them to develop their own taste for music. At an early stage, dedication can be ingrained in a student by participating in Recitals, Talent Shows and Worship Services. It takes diligence and dedication ? also sacrifices to make piano a beautiful craft.

Review Of The Bernward Kock Cd Walking Through Clouds

The exceptionally talented Pop artist Bernward Kock has released him CD entitled Walking Through Clouds. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Bernward Kock fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Walking Through Clouds Bernward Kock?s artistic excellence is on full display as Koch has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be him best work to date.

I wish it weren?t the case but, it?s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can?t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Walking Through Clouds. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

One of the nicer things about a CD like this is with this level of talent even if Pop isn?t your favorite genre you still can?t help but appreciate the greatness of the artist.

If you?re a Bernward Kock fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don?t even have to be a fan of Koch, or even Pop to know is good. It?s just good music. Period.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 3 – Walking Through Clouds, track 6 – One Step At A Time, and track 16 – Travel Lightly.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [ in “Stuck On REpeat”] is track 1 – Touched By Love. Wow!

5 Songwriting Tips For The Lazy

It’s funny, being a songwriter myself, I always find that writing songs can sometimes be a chore. But why does it feel this way? Isn’t this supposed to be my passion? Isn’t this supposed to be something that I never get bored of?

? well, not exactly. Everything gets boring once in a while, even the things that you?re most passionate about. So every so often I like to take the lazy man’s route to doing things. And surprisingly, I often produce some very good results!

So listen up. If you newbie at songwriting, or even if you have been at it for a while — I’m going to a couple of simple tricks that will help you start the writing process within minutes.

Here we go?

1) Review a particular situation in your day. It could be at work, during your travels, or at home. It could be with your workmates, your family or your friends. Just any situation that affected you in either a positive or negative way.

An example of this would be “when you’re at work, your boss just keeps hounding you. But, the only thing that keeps you going throughout the day is that you know that somebody in the office has a crush on you”

(the above is a very dry example? but try to work with me here!)

2) Write down as many words as you can think of that relate to your situation.

Let’s follow the example from earlier on:

anger, pain, sad, happy, excitement, nervousness, anxious, misery, impatience, relaxation, goofy, sophisticated, annoying, frustrating, antagonising, fancy, sexy, cool, pretty, smile, etc, etc? you get the point 🙂

3) Write down random short sentences about your situation including the words that you mentioned him step 2. So let’s continue in our little experiment?

? the way he talked to me really angers me?
? if only he knew the pain I suffered inside?
? when I see her pretty eyes light up it makes me smile?
? I have to act cool and sophisticated — don’t want to get frustrated?
? he doesn’t know what makes my day go by?
? don’t want to be in this misery for much longer?

Etc, etc. at this point it’s important to note that you don’t have to use all the words that you mentioned earlier in step two. As you can see I?ve even started to make up my own lines *without* any of the words too! Sometimes, I’m rhyming the words without even realizing. And this is exactly where the magic starts to happen?

You can easily turn this idea into a full-fledged song. Use to help you find words that rhyme? and also other related words as well.

My example was very average and simplified — but you can use an example that’s a little more dramatic. You should really get wild with your ideas! Really, just let loose.

4) Listen to a ?backing track? (an instrumental of a song) that you have NO CLUE about. While it?s playing, make up a melody. Doesn?t have to be perfect, just create a melody on the fly. You don?t have to sing any lyrics either. Just ?humm? or ?laaa? a tune out until you?re hearts content.

Why do this? This is an exercise that will subconsciously preparing you to create melodies for you?re own chord sequences in the next step.

5) Create a SIMPLE chord progression on the guitar or keyboard. When I say simple, I mean *simple*. Maybe TWO chords for the verse and TWO chords for the chorus. Now create a melody on top of that chord progression. Record the song on tape. There you have it.

NOTE: if you don?t play an instrument, then hook up with someone who does. After all, you pretty much have half the song now 🙂

Still think it?s difficult conceiving an idea? Want to know more? I have *plenty more* that I want to share with you?

Beginner Songwriting Speedy Starter Kit

You don’t have to play an instrument to start writing songs effectively or successfully in a very short time. Of course, it is advantageous to play an instrument, but it’s definitely not a requirement. Indeed, many hit songs have been written by beginner songwriters just like you who didn’t know the difference between a chorus and prechorus and an “Amaj” chord from an “Amin”. Many of these songwriters have turned out to have only one hit song, some partly because they didn’t keep applying themselves to the craft of songwriting and others for a variety of reasons.

If you want to learn songwriting quickly and correctly, you don’t need to spend a fortune on special songwriting courses and e-books–at least not just yet! These types of instructional materials certainly have their place in songwriting but most should be used when you reach the intermediate stage.

The first thing you need to do is buy or borrow “The Craft Of Lyric Writing”, by Sheila Davis. For less than a fraction of the cost of expensive songwriting lessons and courses, this book will teach you all the basics when it comes to lyric writing at an accelerated pace as long as you apply yourself. You’ll instantly have a better understanding of how to construct the lyrical parts of songs and you’ll be inspired to continue studying this book which doesn’t contain even one wasted page!

Next, listen to your favorite songs and by applying techniques learned from Sheila Davis’s book, you’ll begin to hear those songs in a different light! Now it’s your turn.

Armed with nothing but the essential basics learned from the book as well as your own melodic creativity, you’ll start to hear your songwriting come alive, one line or phrase at a time!

After that, then you might want to consider investing in a decent acoustic guitar or keyboard. Buy an inexpensive chord book (for either guitar or keyboard–they’re different) and begin learning chords. By combining an instrument with “The Craft Of Lyric Writing” you already have the greatest head start possible in songwriting. On the other hand, if you choose to sing your melodies, it can be done effectively, but understand you will be somewhat limited when it comes to harmonizing your songs with different chords. With an instrument, you can hear how different chords sound and how they color your melodies.

In a couple of short months you’ll probably find you’re not a beginning songwriter anymore!

Piano Bars In Nyc – The Rum Bar And Karen Brown

Last Saturday night a friend of ours had some visitors from out of town, and asked us to meet with them at The Rum Bar for a ‘fun night.” And a fun night it was!

The Rum Bar is located in the lobby of the Edison Hotel, right off Broadway, on 47th Street. Although I’m not familiar with the hotel facilities -and I understand the place has many that they are proud of- I am much acquainted with the Rum Bar, for over the years I’ve spent quite a few nights there.

For those of you who might be wondering why I’m writing this piece, let me set your mind at ease: I’m in no way connected, get paid, or receive gifts from the either the hotel or the bar. To inform my readers of what a New York City fine time is, is my motivation.

Two sections are immediately discernible as you walk into the joint; the largest piece of real estate belonging to the long bar -the altar- where the serious worshippers of the god Bacchus not only offer their libations, but also they make them disappear faster than I can change channels with a remote. A piano/organ occupies the smaller remainder of the space.

I’ll talk about this: the piano bar section.

Karen Brown, the resident musician and gifted pianist-organist, plays and sings just about any song anybody can think of and request. Her repertoire is just fabulous. And if she doesn’t know a song by heart, she will dig up her indexed music books and in no time she’ll produce the sheets. Since I don’t sing, I pretty much observe and enjoy watching Karen accommodate requests and those who wish to sing.

Besides having a prodigious musical memory, Karen also seems to be endowed with name recall and ‘face recognition’ virtues, for she never gets a name wrong.

For a while she sings the crowd’s favorites, which range from Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rogers and Hammerstein to Broadway Show songs, and on to more contemporary songs made famous by Sinatra, Streisand, Tony Bennett, Vic Damone, Patsy Klein, Elvis Presley, etc.

Around 10 PM, the real troopers -including some big name celebrities- from the Broadway shows begin to filter in to regale the audience with some of their own personal favorites.

Last Saturday night I had the pleasure of listening to “Sam the Drummer,” who not only sang some oldies, but also told some jokes with such perfect delivery that would put to shame Jerry Seinfeld, or even Jay Leno. And should I mention that Sam is 89 years young? Who cares? The man showed the younger set what laughter and music can do for the soul and the body! Anyway, for anyone to follow him would have been a tough go indeed. But his wife followed him, and she outdid him! She sang some delightful comical songs that were even more hilarious than Sam’s jokes.

As I walked around and mingled a little, I met lots of people from Europe: a couple from Wales, a group from London, and another from Norway. And of course there was a contingent of Chicagoans, who were drowning their sorrows away at having lost their bid to Rio de Janeiro for the 2012 Olympics.

For the price of a few beers and drinks (no cover), New Yorkers and visitors can have a grand time. The Rum Bar is a smoke-free facility and safe to boot. No one hassles you and if people get loud and obnoxious, the waiter -Thai, who also sings by the way- will escort them out.

For 14 years the gorgeous Karen Brown has entertained her crowd of faithful followers five nights a week from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The wood-walled bar is just right for this kind of open mike entertainment. Even if you don’t sing, soon you’ll be joining in and mouthing “Crazy,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” or “The Girl from Ipanema.”

Whether you are an American or a visitor from other lands, and are coming to New York City, and if you ever want to see and hear a woman with perfect pitch-come to The Rum Bar: Karen Brown will welcome you. Just make sure you tell her Marc sent you.

How To Play Bass Guitar

This little essay on how to play bass guitar is aimed at the guitar player who needs to enter some kind of witness protection program but still maintain a tenuous connection with the world of music. This has proven to be a great way to keep your anonymity while staying in the public eye. The bass guitar player in a rock band maintains the rhythm of the song while the lead guitarist is checking out the chicks in the audience, and the drummer is recalling what decade he is in. To change to this subservient but useful role in a musical group requires a little understanding of the difference between a bass guitar and a real guitar together with some idea of bass guitar playing technique.

Theoretically any guitar player can switch from lead to bass although only one guitarist of note – Greg Lake of Emerson, Lake And Palmer – made a career out of it. It was rumored that he thought it would be a good way to stop attracting women. Actually he constantly switched between lead and bass while maintaining his position as lead singer. Clearly a guy with issues.

Anyway let us get onto the main features of a bass guitar. The standard tuning of a four string bass guitar is E A D G. The tunings are similar on the five string bass except for a low B string, and on a six string except for a high C string. So on a 6 string bass the tuning is B E A D G C. There are also seven string basses with a high F string.
There are several ways you can tune a bass guitar but as they are the same as those used to tune a regular guitar, I will not mention them. As with other guitars you tune the bass guitar by loosening the string and tuning up to the note you are aiming for. Tune each string separately being careful to match the sound of the string to your bass guitar tuner. While we are on the subject of tuning, be sure to do a search for a free online bass guitar tuner.

On the electric bass guitar, the music is made by plucking with the index and middle fingers or with a pick. Early Fender basses had a “thumbrest” attached to the pickguard, below the strings. This was to rest the fingers while the thumb plucked the strings. The common perception is that the pick is used by rock bass players but players of all styles have their own individual techniques, sometimes using thumb, fingers or pick according to the sound they want. The guitar can sound different if all upstrokes, all downstrokes or alternating strokes of the pick are employed.

Some bass players such as Les Claypool and John Entwistle played using their fingernails similar to a classical acoustic guitarist. There is controversy among musical historians over whether bass guitarists who pluck with their fingers are innovators who have explored new horizons or they simply were not told about plectrums.

Playing the bass guitar needs a certain amount of speed and dexterity, and bass guitar music will demand that you develop your own style. For inspiration listen to the most popular and influential bass players of past generations such as Paul McCartney, Pino Palladino – the replacement bass player for John Entwistle in The Who, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jaco Pastorius – called by many musicians the most innovative bass player ever, Mark King – a very fast English bass player, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.

Cutting Out The Middle Man; Be Your Own Music Publisher Feb 2

Most performers are more than happy to hand off the business end of music to someone else. But the more you hand off, the less money you stand to make and the less control over your work you are likely to have. One way to retain revenue and increase control is to cut out the middle man and become your own music producer. The first step, though, is to make sure you understand what a music publisher does.

Music publishers have been around longer than records. In fact, it can be traced back to the 15th century. Composers relied on publishers to sell the sheet music of their songs. As the music industry expanded with the arrival of the radio and phonograph, the role of the publisher also expanded. Currently, the main function of a music publisher it to administer song licensing and to track and collect royalties.

So act as your own music publisher, you need an in-depth knowledge into the different types of royalties can be collected. Mechanical Royalties initially meant anytime a record was played on any mechanical device, such as a jukebox or even a music box. The most common mechanical royalty came from records. Now the classification includes songs reproduced on CDs, audiocassettes and other devices sold on a per-unit basis.

There are also synchronization licenses which are collected any time a song is paired with a visual image such as in film or a video. Transcription licenses come when a song is used in a radio commercial. Print licenses for sheet music may be less common but many artists now publish their songs in books which also falls under a print license.
Even for professional music publishing companies, collecting money from foreign countries can be a crap shoot. Laws differ country to country regarding royalties so it is a common practice to enlist of foreign music publisher to administer your licenses in that country in exchange for a fee that averages about 20%.

If you feel you have the time and commitment to administer your own music publishing, you need to set up a company. After selecting an available name for your company, you need to apply for a publishing license from one of the performance licensing companies (ASCAP, BMI or SESAC) which will require an application fee. Once they accept your application, register your business, use your DBA papers (Doing Business As) to open a bank account and you are set to start publishing your own music.

How Music Has Evolved.

Music is no longer just something to pass time with has now become a very main stream business which deals with millions every year. We may just be aware of the end product that is the song that we hear, but we must realise that what we hear is just a very small part of the entire making of that song. It all starts with the singer singing though it may sound as the most important but today it is just one part of the entire machinery though essential but still a very small part. Because apart from the singing we have a lot of other things as well just to give you some examples like the instruments, mixing and all the other additions then once the song is made there is the advertisement the distribution, production etc all in all there are a lot of things that go into making one song.

Once a song is made there are many formats that it can be, made into like WMA (Windows Media Audio), MP3, WAV etc. Though the most commonly used these days is MP3 format as it not only gives very good sound quality but also occupies very less space when compared to other music formats.

The music industry in the whole is a very large industry, taking particularly of a specific genre of music that is Christian music. It has come into the main stream of the music only in the last few decades when there was a very large growth in the Christian music industry that it was able to compete with the other genres in the music industry.

But a very big confusion that people have who are interested in the Christian music is where to get them as they are still growing they are not available everywhere. But all those who were upset as they were not able to get this Christian music are in for a surprise; of late a lot of sites are there which provide Christian music, in these sites you can easily get any and all kinds of Christian music material that you want. And the most important thing is that most of it is available for free download so we will not even have to pay for it. We all would remember the days when we had to pay for entire cassettes and disk just to listen to few songs that we like but those days are gone as now we can easily get MP3 songs of whatever genre we want and whenever we want.
